Hand-carved by Egyptian artisans from green alabaster, this obelisk reproduces the tapering stone monuments ancient Egyptians dedicated to the sun god Ra and raised in pairs at temple entrances. Real obelisks were quarried from a single block of stone and topped with a pyramidion, once believed to catch the first light of sunrise; the surviving pair Queen Hatshepsut erected still stands at Karnak today.
