This hand-carved black stone obelisk is a scaled reproduction of the towering monuments ancient Egyptians raised at temple entrances in honor of the sun god Ra. Real obelisks — like the surviving pair Queen Hatshepsut erected at Karnak — were quarried from a single block of stone, tapered to a pyramid-shaped tip once believed to catch the first rays of sunrise, and carved with hieroglyphic inscriptions naming the pharaoh and the gods they honored. This piece carries carved hieroglyph and scarab motifs in that same tradition; the scarab beetle was linked to the god Khepri and represented rebirth in ancient Egyptian belief.
