Product Description:

Anubis is the Greek name for the god of mummification, death, and the underworld (Duat) in ancient Egyptian religion.

This deity is usually depicted as a canine or a man with a dog's head.

Archaeologists have concluded that the animal that was revered as Anubis is an Egyptian canine, the African jackal.

Like many ancient Egyptian deities, Anubis has assumed different roles in different contexts. Pictured as a protector of tombs early in the First Dynasty (c. 3100 - c. 2890 BC), Anubis was also responsible for mummification. By the Middle Kingdom (circa 2055 - 1650 BC) he was replaced by Osiris in his role as master of the underworld. One of his notable roles was as a spirit guide in the afterlife.

He would be part of the “Weighing of the Heart” ceremony, in which the heart of the deceased was weighed against the feather of the goddess of truth, to determine whether his or her soul was pure enough to be allowed in the realm of Osiris.

Despite being one of the oldest deities and "one of the most frequently mentioned" in the Egyptian Pantheon, Anubis did not play any role in Egyptian mythology.

Anubis is depicted in black, the color symbolizing regeneration, life, the soil of the Nile River, and the corpse discoloration after embalming.

Anubis is related to Wepwawet, another Egyptian deity, depicted with the head of a dog or other canine, but with grey or white fur.

Historians assume that the two characters were eventually combined.

The female counterpart of Anubis is Anput. His daughter is the goddess of snakes Kebechet, and possibly Amit.
