Hand-carved by Egyptian artisans from natural alabaster, this obelisk reproduces the tapering stone monuments ancient Egyptians dedicated to the sun god Ra and erected in pairs at temple entrances. Real obelisks were single quarried blocks capped with a pyramidion, often sheathed in gold or electrum so it would catch the sunrise first; the surviving obelisks of Queen Hatshepsut still stand at Karnak today. Pharaohs and priests regarded them as a link between the temple and the sun god's realm.
