This hand-carved alabaster statue reproduces the Great Sphinx of Giza, the massive limestone monument on the Giza plateau combining a lion's body with a human head, traditionally linked to Pharaoh Khafre and built during Egypt's Old Kingdom around 2500 BCE. For centuries the Sphinx stood as guardian of the plateau and was later buried to its shoulders in sand before being progressively uncovered; the Dream Stele placed between its paws by Pharaoh Thutmose IV recounts a legend of the young prince's promise to clear the sand in exchange for the throne.
